Learning unit contents

In this course, we will study the theoretical debates surrounding the concepts of integration, diversity and multiculturalism in the field of migration studies. We will look at theories developed to analyse the issues and policies concerning the process of integration (understood as an emic notion) of people in migration situations, as well as the management of cultural diversity within given contexts. Lessons will focus on the following themes (more details will be provided at the beginning of the course): the reflexive turn in migration studies and its impact on the study of integration and diversity issues; the contested concept of integration; pathways to integration in Europe; culture and diversity; interculturalism and multiculturalism; superdiversity and intersectionality.

At the same time, attention will be paid to the analysis of individual and collective experiences in interaction with integration policies and diversity management measures, with a (non-exclusive) focus on the experience of international/foreign students in higher education institutions and on institutional policies and practices concerning issues of equality, diversity and inclusion.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

By the end of this course, students will have developed an in-depth theoretical knowledge of the concepts of integration, diversity and multiculturalism and the debates surrounding them, in order to be able to demonstrate their complexity, deconstruct them and make critical use of them in the analysis of issues in the field.

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

As the course is given in English, a knowledge of this language is necessary both orally and in writing.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

After a general introduction aimed at establishing the framework within which the course will evolve - in particular the points of attention and the epistemological and methodological posture that will be taken into account in the study of these concepts, starting from a reflexive and critical approach to migration studies - different ways in which the issues and policies relating to integration, diversity and multiculturalism have been apprehended will be presented through the analysis of a series of reference readings. The course consists of frontal lessons, reading and discussion of scientific articles, putting theory into perspective in relation to concrete examples of integration and diversity management policies (including, depending on the size of the group, practical exercises). The detailed lesson plan will be presented in the introductory lesson.

Additional information:

The assessment will be based both on active participation in class (5 points) and on the presentation of an analytical paper on the experience of international students in higher education institutions and institutional policies and practices relating to issues of equality, diversity and inclusion (15 points). During the introductory lesson, students will be given detailed instructions on how to participate in the learning activities carried out in class (readings, presentations, group discussions, exercises) and the examination paper.
