Learning unit contents
Descriptive statistics: presenting data in charts and tables; numerical descriptive measures; bivariate case (measures of relationships between variables)
Probability theory: probability; random variables and distributions; bivariate case; function of r.v.
Statistical Inference: principles of inferential statistics; confidence intervals; hypothesis testing
Learning outcomes of the learning unit
According to the intended learning outcomes of the programm, i.e. "use adequately the statistics in the context of the management", after this course, the student
- will learn the basics necessary for the proper understanding and the proper use of statistics in various areas (management, market research, finance, ...).
- will be able to appeal to the theories described in the contents above to analyze data to determine the analytical tools that are suitable for this analysis and will be able to adequately draw and formulate conclusions arising from this analysis.
Prerequisite knowledge and skills
- Basic algebra: order of operations, fractions, distributive property, use of parentheses, remarkable products, use of summation symbol
- Function of variables: knowing how to graph linear functions, use of the correct vocabulary (abscissa, ordinate, sloped,...)
Planned learning activities and teaching methods
The sessions are mainly based on the presentation of the theoretical frame by the teacher and the practice of exercices and applications by the students. The teacher expects the students to actively participate during the sessions, for instance via Wooclap or other surveys.
The teacher uses Excel and Geogebra to provide illustrations of several concepts of the course. Students are invited to learn to use those softwares, but this learning is not assessed.

Ex-cathedra sessions where the presentation of theoretical concepts and the resolution of exercises by the students will be mixed.
