Spanish - General translation to French including aspects of sight translation

This course is based on the written practice of translation of non-specialised texts from Spanish to French. These texts are largely taken from the general press and cover current affairs.

Spanish to French sight translation

This course focusses on learning the techniques required to translate orally, without any prior work on the source text. It should enable students to be able to carry out this exercise on texts of moderate difficulty, in familiar lexical fields and no longer than 350 words.

Initially, students will learn how to identify translation difficulties in the source text in a single reading, and how to develop a notation system that will enable them to resolve them in a fluent flow when giving an oral rendition. The aim is not to produce a perfect translation, but rather to master the syntactic mechanisms of the two languages and to demonstrate an ability to avoid the most common errors when translating from Spanish to French (calques, literal translations, word order in the sentence, etc.).

In addition to this technical training, students will also learn how to deliver a translation with little preparation, in reading mode and in public, which involves acquiring other skills: public speaking, working on the voice, the flow, controlling non-verbal language, and the ability to remain calm when faced with a translation that may feel less than perfect.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

Through their excellent knowledge of the source language (a prerequisite for this course), students will acquire a wide range of techniques enabling them to overcome obstacles when translating from a source to a target text.

The course also aims to:

- deepen their knowledge of vocabulary in the fields concerned, in relation to current political, social or artistic events;

- master the techniques of writing the types of texts covered.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

The teaching method is based on two equally important working fields:

- on the one hand, preparation of a translation by each student at home, then shared and discussed in class;

- on the other, translation workshops around a document which has not been prepared in advance. The class will be divided into groups of three or four students working together on these documents. The aim of this method is to develop all issues or differences emerging from these discussions and to support the work of each student as they progress

Spanish to French sight translation

Before each class, the subject of the text to be translated will be announced, so that students can carry out appropriate lexical research. The texts deal with current affairs and are taken from the press or from work carried out in professional contexts where translators may be required to carry out this type of exercise, such as international institutions or companies.

The first classes in the term are devoted to learning common reading and note-taking techniques.

Subsequently and as far as possible, each student will take the floor in each lesson
