Units courses prerequisite and corequisite

Prerequisite or corequisite units are presented within each program

Learning unit contents

The aim of this course is twofold:

  • to extend students' lexical knowledge;
  • to develop students' oral language skills (B2);
  • to deepen students' knowledge of Flanders and the Netherlands. These two entities will be approached from several angles: cultural, socio-economic, historical, political, etc.
To achieve this objective, students will read and analyse texts on themes relating to Flanders and the Netherlands. They will also watch or listen to audiovisual materials on the same subjects.

The analysis of the authentic material will be followed by a collective discussion during the course where the students will have to express themselves orally in Dutch. Given the practical nature of the course, regular and active participation is essential.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

By the end of the course, students will...

  • have refined their command of the grammatical, lexical and idiomatic structures of standard Dutch;
  • have a better understanding of the function of linguistic variations (social, geographical);
  • have reached level B2 of the European framework for listening and speaking. Among other things, this means being able to
    1° recognise cultural elements, values and references in a written or spoken text (for example, assumptions, allusions and stereotypes) and
    2° express themselves in accordance with cultural codes and socio-linguistic norms.

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

Exam(s) in session

Any session

- In-person

written exam AND oral exam

Additional information:

15% of the mark: classwork (involvement and active participation in weekly practical activities, quality of preparation and oral presentations)

85% of the mark: written exam (audition and vocabulary | 40% of the final mark) and oral exam (reading and speaking | 45% of the final mark) in June. The 2 parts of the test are mutually dependent; in other words, a student who sat only the written part without the oral part (or vice versa) would obtain a final mark of 0/20.
