Learning unit contents

The aim of this course is to confront the students with a real-life project situation. They will have to analyze its constraints and opportunities, and suggest options to optimize its strengths and minimize its negative impact on the overall context.

The students are divided into teams (max.3 students) that must exchange information and cooperate effectively in order to carry out a full diagnostic of the studied project and present the most appropriate options of enhancement - not only from a technical point of view but also from an economic, aesthetic and environmental point of view.

Students have to quickly study several project variants and give a rough global analysis of the project's strengths and weaknesses, opportunities and threats. Challenges linked to the implementation, organization of the building site, cost estimates and integration into the environment have to be dealt with. Any further thematic you want to tackle further is very welcome.

At the end of this course, you should be able to react in the manner of a practicing engineer, be pro-active and autonomous from the teaching staff. You should be able to think about different technical solutions and their realization in a short time. You will also have to carry out this type of reflection in a team, with all the social constraints that it implies.

From a technical point of view, you are expected to be able to get a swift grasp at information provided by third parties, such as detailed technical drawings, environmental impact study, product sheets and so on. You will also have to present the essential results using appropriate means of communication (technical reports, oral presentations, summary reports, drawing up concise plans and diagrams).

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

At the end of this studio, the student will be able to behave as a practitioner engineer. In particular, for problems as various as the design of a lock, a dam or a building (according to the chosen option), he/she will be able to analyze, within short delays, different architectural and technical design solutions and their possible completion. He/She will be able to carry out the kind of group study, with all social constraints it implies. From a technical viewpoint, the student will handle some design aspects that are too often considered as secondary (physics of the building, hydraulic aspects, environmental impact, etc.). He/She will be able to use information provided by third parties, as detailed drawings, in order to base their studies on. He/She will also be able to present the main results of his/her investigations with adequate communication means (technical reports, oral presentations, summary reports, concise drawings and sketches).

This course contributes to the learning outcomes I.1, I.2, II.1, II.2, II.3, III.1, III.2, III.3, III.4, IV.1, IV.2, IV.3, IV.4, IV.5, V.1, V.2, V.3, VI.1, VI.2, VI.3, VI.4, VII.1, VII.2, VII.3, VII.4, VII.5, VII.6 of the MSc in civil engineering.

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

All the subjects covered during the studies of Architectural, Civil or Geological engineering will be needed.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

This is a project course with several speakers who will follow each other during the course sessions. The students themselves are expected to develop their analysis and options according to the different issues that are successively studied.

Other activities such as site visits, field trips and roundtable events will be encouraged and/or planned.

The student is required to go through the MOOC "ConstruiREcycler" to further their understanding of circular economy in the Architecture - Engineering - Construction (AEC) industry, in order to introduce themselves to potential options of the valorization of by-products. They will be asked to develop links between the different course sessions.

At various important stages of the project, a technical report and/or plans and schemes are required.

This class takes place from September 20 until December 13, 2023. The sessions are face-to-face and the presence of the students to each session is mandatory unless otherwise indicated.

The teams are formed during the first session. It is the responsibility of these teams to organize their internal and external collaborations at all levels. Student will however receive a brief and will have to give in short feedbacks on the collaborative process within the group.

Mode of delivery (face to face, distance learning, hybrid learning)

This integrated project is being conducted over the first quadrimester (the first four months). The classes are face-to-face and the attendance of the students is compulsory. Teams The teams are formed during the first meeting. It is for these teams to organize their internal and external collaborations at all levels. Supervision The speakers will guide the work of the students throughout the project. Technical reports and drawings are required from teams at each main stage of the project as well as at the end of the project. These intermediate or final results must be provided at the deadlines imposed by the teacher. Seminars The attendance of the students is compulsory during the seminars.

Recommended or required readings

The data required to achieve the project will be either given to the students, or sought by the students (library, internet, companies...).

Exam(s) in session

Any session

- In-person

oral exam

Written work / report

Continuous assessment

Additional information:

A continuing evaluation (tasks 1 and 2) is organized. The drawings and the different reports from the students will be evaluated. The involvement of the students during the classes will be considered for the grade. A time schedule will be aailable on CELCAT.

Examination
The exam will consist in an oral presentation of a summary of the project. Each team has a common presentation. Following the presentation, questions are asked to the team or individually to the members of the team.

The jury will be composed of the teachers involved in this project and engineering practitioners.
