Learning unit contents

  • Main principles and arguments of the classification of flowering plants
  • Polarisation of traits : primitive and derived features in Angiosperms
  • Milestones in the evolutionary history of flowering plants
  • Description of the main families and taxa of flowering plants, from an agricultural and ecological perspective

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

  • To understand the objectives and the main principles of the classification of flowering plants
  • To describe the main trends of the evolution of angiosperms
  • To identify the main botanical families of our regions and/or cultivated, on the basis of their general features
  • To situate the main families of angiosperms within the overall diversity of the group, from an phylogenetic perspective
  • To use a reference flora and acquire the botanical vocabulary
  • To make an herbarium, complying to imposed rules and developing skills to observe plants in their environments
  • To recognize at first glance taxa of interest in agriculture, forestry, ecology, and assign them to the correct classification units (with families as a priority)

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

  • Lectures ex cathedra (5 X 2h)
  • Laboratory exercices : thematic sessions (4 X 2h)
  • Laboratory exercices: sessions for the determination of plants from herbariums using the reference flora.
  • Excursion : discovering the flora of the campus of Gembloux
  • Individual work: making of an herbarium
  • Online training for the instant recognition of taxa, using a numeric image bank on the web platform of the course
  • Observation of the Botanic Garden of the campus, following of the Facebook page dedicated to the garden

Face-to-face activities in auditorium and in laboratory, individual work in the field, training activities online

  • Herbarium deposited and  evaluated, containing  40 plant taxa
  • Identification of Angiosperm taxa on pictures and on living materials.
  • Evaluation of the knowledge of botanical families (written or oral test).
The modalities, adapted to the sanitary situation, are communicated on the eCampus platform of the course.
