Units courses prerequisite and corequisite
Prerequisite or corequisite units are presented within each program
Learning unit contents
The workshop aims at developing the students' reflection upon the documentary approach to a theme that is both personal and universal. It is conceived as a place for reflection on images, sounds and editing. Each group of students is required to make a film, the theme of which is imposed by the course instructor.
Learning outcomes of the learning unit
The objective of this course is to enable students to acquire the basic knowledge and skills needed to write and direct a short documentary film. This initiation will allow them to tackle ethical as well as aesthetical issues such as the point of view, the choice of framing, the importance of sound, the time and rhythm of editing, etc... which are essential to the creation of a film.
Prerequisite knowledge and skills
Having taken the Audiovisual Techniques course (CINE0039) is an asset but not a mandatory prerequisite. Students with no audiovisual experience will be offered a technical refresher class.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods
The workshop is taught by filmmaker Christophe Hermans.
Preparatory sessions take place in the first semester. During these sessions, students participate in discussions on documentary filmmaking, based on a selection of cinematographic works.
During the second semester, students are first asked to develop a documentary project in the form of a dossier. Then, they carry out their project by refining it progressively thanks to several collective discussions throughout the production process.
Mode of delivery (face to face, distance learning, hybrid learning)
Face-to-face course
Recommended or required readings
No syllabus but precise instructions delivered to the students via a document distributed at the first session.
Exam(s) in session
Any session
- In-person
oral exam
Written work / report
Continuous assessment
Additional information:
Any session :
- If In-person = oral exam
- If Remote = oral exam
- If evaluation in "hybrid" = preferred in-person Additional information:
Based on the practical work submitted at the end of the year, the evaluation is less about the finished work than about the evolution of the creative process over the course of the year. Indeed, the workshop is less understood as a place for the realization of individual projects than for a collective exchange around the questions inherent to the language of cinema.
Work placement(s)
