Units courses prerequisite and corequisite

Prerequisite or corequisite units are presented within each program

Learning unit contents

This course presents the renewable energy sources that are relevant in the Belgian context: solar, wind, biomass, hydraulic. For each sector, the course presents the resource, the collection and conversion technologies, some sizing elements, simulation models and an analysis of the environmental impacts.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

At the end of the course, the student should be able to :

  • Understand, explain and analyse the resources, the collection, conversion and storage technologies related to the covered subjects;
  • Carry out a pre-sizing and evaluate the production and/or consumption of the systems studied;
  • For the solar and wind energy sectors: use numerical simulation (with TRNSYS software) to contribute to the evaluation of the performance of an energy project in one of these sectors.
  • Take into account the environmental impacts associated with each sector.

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

Basics in physics, chemistry and thermodynamics.
Use of a spreadsheet (Excel)

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

The course alternates theoretical presentations and practical work sessions devoted to the dimensioning of solutions. Some of them use TRNSYS and Excel software in the computer room.

Mode of delivery (face to face, distance learning, hybrid learning)

Teaching is face-to-face.

Recommended or required readings

Solar Energy Part
Course notes: Copy of Power Point presentations
Recommended reading: DUFFIE and BECKMANN: Solar Engineering of thermal processes, Wiley and Sons

Wind Energy Part
Course notes: Copy of Power Point presentations

Hydroelectricity part
Course notes: Copies of Powerpoint presentations and other course materials available via eCampus

Biomass part
Lecture notes:Copy of Power Point presentations
Recommended reading: Guide to biogas, FNR, https://mediathek.fnr.de/guide-sur-le-biogaz-de-la-production-a-l-utilisation.html

The course includes a written evaluation per source: Solar, wind, water and biomass parts: written exam with several questions per track.
The overall mark is obtained from a weighted average between the 4 parts of the assessment. The weightings are defined as follows:

  • Solar: 37%;
  • Wind power: 16%;
  • Biomass: 32%;
  • Hydraulics: 16%.

Work placement(s)

No internship.
