Learning unit contents

The course provides a systematic presentation of the various vehicles and components of teaching French as a foreign and second language:

  • the subject matter of this course (language, communication, culture, etc.),
  • its players (the learners, the teacher, etc.),
  • its methods (grammar/translation, structural/behaviourist, communicative, etc.)
  • its objectives and its goals (and their evaluation, etc.)
  • its circumstances (place, institution, conditions in which it takes place), etc.
The course introduces both the principles of foreign language learning, in particular French, and practical in-class teaching methods (verbal interactions, notional and functional approaches, per project; lesson planning and organization; etc.)

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

Analyze critically with the participants theories and methods of teaching French as a foreign and second language as well as the conditions in which the language is taught.

Train the participants on the principles and practice of language classroom management to prepare or improve them for the profession of teaching French as a foreign or second language in its rich variety.

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

Some knowledge and/or experience in linguistics and/or teaching.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

This course is an "oral" course, which involves:

  • the interactions between the teacher and the students, and between the students during the course, go beyond memorizing syllabus and reading books for final evaluation;
  • the active presence in the course in order to benefit from and participate in these exchanges is therefore essential;
  • that the professor will develop the course based on student reactions or any other circumstances that he will consider significant during the course, so that the details of the final evaluation cannot be determined at the beginning.
Except in exceptional cases duly examined, there is no provision for an alternative programme or exemption from this course.

Mode of delivery (face to face, distance learning, hybrid learning)
