The lectures will be dedicated to applied exercices on a computer. The lecture aims to prepare the students to caracterize a given landscape through mapping tools. 

In particular, the class aims to provide the following capacities to the students:

- Basic rules of cartography

- Basic rules of topography

- Basic of land cover classification and quantification

The lectures will be dedicated to applied exercices on a computer. The lecture aims to prepare the students to caracterize a given landscape through mapping tools.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

At the end of the lecture, students will be capable to understand and use basic notions related to the mapping and the analysis of a given landscape. Students will be able to do simple mapping and analysis operations with QGIS software.

Introduction to GIS as a tool for spatial data capture, management and analysis in the context of natural hazards management (for the sutdents of the Master in Natural hazards Management) or landscape architecture (for the students of the Master in Landscape Architecture). An important part of the course is dedicated to practical exercises, which allow students to discover a desktop GIS software (QGis).
After completing the course the student is expected to be able to :
- deal with the basic concepts of geographic information systems (vectror and raster data model, georeferrencing, projection, topology, digitizing, goeprocessing, ...);
- handle the main functions of a desktopGIS software (data visualisation, data selection, layer symbolisation, geoprocessing, layout preparation);
- find and set up GIS resources (data, tools) on the web.

Classes are given live (except if advised differently by authorities due to the covid crisis) and will all include the presentation of practical exercices.

A session of Q/A will be organized for both the theoretical and applied part with the teaching assistant, during december.

Practical exercises are also made available to students in the form of written notes and videos.

The face-to-face classes (18 sessions of 3 hours each) are organized in the computer rooms (Pascal 1 and Pascal 2). Participation in these sessions is not compulsory.

They are mainly intended to answer the questions asked by the students for the theoretical part and to help with the practical exercises.

Each student will have to produce a report on a project relating to the territorial analysis of a Walloon municipality. The content and the modalities of delivery of this report will be presented during living sessions and in the form of written specifications.
