Learning unit contents

The theoretical course introduces : - soil components, in particular clays and humus,- physical and chemical soil properties, such as structure, water properties, ion sorption and exchange, and their practical consequences, - soil formation and soil classification, - questions of applied pedology
Workshops are devoted to exercices in applied soil science; concepts of soil mapping and evaluation are illustrated by the reading and interpretation of the soil map of Belgium and also by two field trips (half-day) within the campus. A day trip to a natural region to provides concrete illustrations for notions of profiles and catena.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

Soil is an interface that is particularly important in issues of environment and land use planning. It's crucial to study this interface and its variability (in space and time) in the context of sustainable management of soil resources, especially facing current issues such as soil erosion or soil contamination.

Notions in geology, geography, biology, and environment science.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

isWorkshops are devoted to exercices in applied soil science; concepts of soil mapping and evaluation are illustrated by the reading and interpretation of the soil map of Belgium and also by two field trips (half-day) within the campus.
A day trip to the Belgian loamy region provides concrete illustrations for notions of profiles and catena.

Mode of delivery (face to face, distance learning, hybrid learning)

6x2 hours + 1x3 hours of theoretical lessons. 4x2 hours workshops (including field trips - Sart-Tilman and Roche-au-Faucon-).

1 day trip in the loamy Region.
