Learning unit contents

The theoretical course is made of 5 chapters:
1. What is spatial planning?
2. Spatial planning and the related disciplines
3. Spatial planning and environment
4. The context of spatial planning in Wallonia
5. The spatial planning devices in Wallonia

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

Provide theoretical and practical knowledges about spatial planning devices and practices.
Those knowledges have the following main purposes:
- to prepare students of the planning option to more specialized courses as well as to their professional activities in planning
- to prepare other students from the geography master to reframe issues and political debates in the field of spatial planning

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

An open attitude towards social and economic problems.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Seminars with professionals active in the field of spatial planning. A field visit devoted to urban planning policies in the city of Maastricht.
The field visit in Maastricht is organised on a Saterday.

Mode of delivery (face to face, distance learning, hybrid learning)

- 15 hours of theoretical lectures - 15 hours of workshops and practical exercises - 1 day of fieldworks

Additional information:

An oral exam (100% of the quotation) made of questions related to the theoretical lectures, the seminars and the field visit.

Depending on the number of students, the evaluation can be done via a written exam. For the students who have not passed the written exam or who wish to improve their score, an oral evaluation will be made possible at the end of the session. The final score will then be the average of the ratings for the two exams.

Organisational remarks and main changes to the course

The date of the field visit in Maastricht will be decided at the first theoretical course.
