Units courses prerequisite and corequisite

Prerequisite or corequisite units are presented within each program

Learning unit contents

1) Geodynamics at the planet scale:
- Subdivision along the vertical plane of the Earth: the notion of craton
- Subdivision along the horizontal plane of the Earth: the notion of terrane
- The interpenetration of the two subdivisions within the orogenic events: the notions of lithospheric delamination and of cratonisation

2) The metamorphism within its geodynamical framework:
- The metamorphism at the scale of the belt
- The great types of metamorphisms and their link with the geodynamics

3) The magmatism within its geodynamical framework:
- Classification of the granitoid magmatic series
- Structure and emplacement of granitoids
- Magmatism and geodynamical environment

4) Birth of a continent at the onset of the Palaeoproterozoic: the Birimian from the West African craton

5) The post-collisional magmatism: the Tuareg shield (Sahara)

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

The ultimate goal of this course is the understanding of the ancient and modern orogenies through the multidisciplinary study of magmatic and metamorphic basements within their geodynamical environment.

This imply to integrate data from magmatic and metamorphic petrology, geochemistry, structural geology, geophysics, plate tectonic but also from sedimentology and applied geology.

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

Good knowledge in magmatic petrology, metamorphic petrology and in geochemistry.
