Development of the EEA Nexus dimension

This course supports the MOOC "Challenges of sustainable development and transition" given by Pr Philippe Baret, Pr Nathalie Delzenne and Pr Valérie Swaen. It is centered on interactive sessions with learners. As the MOOC progresses, interactive sessions will be organized with the students in the form of seminars during which (i) the WEF Nexus dimension will be introduced and developed, and (ii) the students will be led to exercise their critical look at the major concepts of sustainable development, transition and WEF Nexus.

While the MOOC focuses on sustainable development and ecological transition, this course focuses on the NEXUS approach:

  • Presentation of the concept, genesis.
  • WEF Nexus approaches.
  • Interconnections
  • Examples of case studies in the countries of the South.
  • Assessment and tools.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

Throughout the course which includes the seminars and the MOOC, the objective pursued is to give the students tools to discuss and critically debate the different concepts related to sustainable development and WEF Nexus as well as the coherence of the articulation between principles and actions.

At the end of this course, students will be able to:

  • Position the WEF Nexus within the framework of sustainable development.
  • Actively and integratedly master a body of multidisciplinary knowledge on sustainable development, transition and the WEF Nexus (definitions, factual elements, key indicators).
  • Take a critical and reflective look at the facts and discourses associated with sustainable development, transition and the WEF Nexus.
  • Identify issues, interdependencies and tensions associated with sustainable development, transition and the WEF Nexus.
  • Explain in a reasoned way why sustainable development and the WEF Nexus must be approached in a systemic way.
