Learning unit contents
The course is entitled "Level D English for students in Psychology and Speech Therapy" and includes the following:
Listening and writing
- writing exercises (note taking and paraphrasing);
- listening comprehension exercises based on authentic audio and video documents;
- developping a better understanding of the characteristics of academic writing;
- academic writing (summary and note taking)
- studying grammatical nuances in written speech for a more profound understanding of texts and successful production of text.
Reading
- reading comprehension of authentic research papers in the field of psychology;
Speaking
- speaking and communication activities: oral presentations, debates, discussions, etc.;
- further study of subject-specific vocabulary;
- listening comprehension activities based on authentic audio and video recordings;
- developing a better understanding of the characteristics of academic writing;
- studying grammatical nuances in written speech for a more profound understanding of texts and successful production of text.
Learning outcomes of the learning unit
Perfecting the four language skills: reading, listening, writing, and speaking, in the domain of psychology.
By the end of the course the students are expected to be able to:
. understand extended speech, even when links are only implied and not signalled explicitly;
. understand long and complex literary and factual texts and specialized articles;
. express themselves fluently and spontaneously, without obvious searching for expressions;
. use language flexibly and effectively;
. formulate ideas and opinions with precision;
. present clear, detailed descriptions of complex subjects (definition, illustration, paraphrase, etc.).
Prerequisite knowledge and skills
The level of the course corresponds to the European level C1. Thus, students will need to have a comprehensive knowledge of the vocabulary and grammar studied in the previous years of their degree (from Remédiation to Level C) or a suitable equivalent.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods
This course uses a dynamic and interactive approach to learning English for specific purposes and is targeted directly at students studying for a Master's degree in Psychology and Speech therapy.
The methods and activities used will involve:
. the transmission of grammar and vocabulary through language practice and adapted exercises;
. using correct grammar and vocabulary in the writing of short texts and definitions;
. analysing authentic articles;
. listening activites based on authentic sources;
. oral presentations based on authentic sources;
. subject-specific discussions and debates in class.

Face-to-face course
Additional information:
First semester
Five 2-hour classes in groups.
Second semester
4 weekly 3-hour classes, taught in groups of about 30 students, followed by oral presentation groups.
Recommended or required readings
Compulsory reading: Level D English Coursebook (available on eCampus).
The coursebook is a collection of authentic articles, listening and writing exercises, reading comprehension exercises, grammar reminders and exercises and other activities.

Additional information:
1. Written assignment - 4/20
Structured summary of an academic lecture (video). The exercise will take place during the January session. Students who obtained a passing grade may keep their grade, or try to improve by retaking the assessment in the spring (in which case we keep the final grade, not the best one). Students who did not obtain a passing grade must retake the assessment, under the penality of getting 0/20.
This grade is automatically transferred between the first and the second session.
2. Oral presentation in class - 3/20
Oral presentation in class to be given in small groups. The subject of the presentation (based on a research paper) is chosen by the students and submitted to the teacher for approval.
This assessment cannot be retaken. The grade is automatically transferred between the first and the second session.
3. Classwork - 2/20
- 1/20: actively attending the last class of the first semester including a peer-reviewing exercise. The student must come with a summary that respects the instructions given in class and online.
- 1/20: actively attending a 3 oral presentation session as a member of the audience. The student must read the article selected by their tutor and presented that day, and must come with a valid reading grid.
4. Written exam - 6/20
Reading comprehension questions based on an unseen text: processing data (true/false, MCQ, etc.), language questions, short explanations of key terms and phrases;
Language questions (grammar and vocabulary in context) based on the texts seen over the year.
5. Oral exam - 5/20
EITHER a presentation of the student's final dissertation OR a presentation of an article chosen by the student and submitted to the teacher for approval.
