Learning unit contents
The course is entitled "Level D English for students in Psychology and Speech Therapy" and includes the following:
- Writing and language theory;
- Speaking and communication activities;
- listening comprehension activities based on authentic audio and video recordings;
- studying grammatical nuances in written speech for a more profound understanding of texts and successful production of text.
Learning outcomes of the learning unit
Perfecting the four language skills (reading, listening, writing, and speaking) in the domain of psychology.
By the end of the course the students are expected to be able to:
. understand extended speech, even when links are only implied and not signalled explicitly;
. understand and analyse complex texts and specialized articles;
. express themselves fluently and spontaneously, without obvious searching for expressions;
. use language flexibly and effectively;
. formulate ideas and opinions with precision;
. present clear, detailed descriptions of complex subjects
Prerequisite knowledge and skills
The level of the course corresponds to the European level C1. Thus, students will need to have a comprehensive knowledge of the vocabulary and grammar studied in the previous years of their degree (from Remédiation to Level C) or a suitable equivalent.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods
This course uses a dynamic and interactive approach to learning English for specific purposes and is targeted directly at students studying for a Master's degree in Psychology and Speech therapy.
The methods and activities used will involve:
. the transmission of grammar and vocabulary through language practice and adapted exercises;
. using correct grammar and vocabulary in writing texts;
. analysing authentic articles;
. listening activites based on authentic sources;
. reformulating and summarising ideas;
. oral presentations based on authentic sources;
. subject-specific discussions.

Additional information:
Q1 - Weekly 2-hour classes for groups of about 30 students plus compulsory exercises and theory to complete online.
Q2 - 3 2-hour modules plus a feedback session and an in-class test.
Recommended or required readings
Compulsory reading: Level D English course notes (available on eCampus).
The course notes are a collection of authentic articles and videos, grammar reminders and exercises, academic theory, and other activities.

1. Critical review - 3/20
Review of a scientific article of your choice (3 - 4 double-spaced pages). Submit by 16/12.
The critical review is compulsory!
2. Oral presentation (debate; Q2) - 4/20
Oral presentation + debate to be given individually. The subject of the presentation is chosen by the students and submitted to the teacher for approval.
The oral presentation/debate is compulsory!
3. Summary and critical thinking task based on a video (Q2) - 2/20
4. Written exam - 6/20
- Summarising and critical thinking task based on a video.
5. Oral exam - 5/20
- Present your critical review and one other article that is linked to it. Compare the two articles using your critical thinking skills.
