Learning unit contents

Oral and written activities based on audio/video files and articles dealing with educational matters. Students will be required to participate actively in the course, which implies that they must have read the texts before coming to class.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

Improving the four language skills, mainly passive language skills such as reading and listening but there will also be some speaking exercises.
Enhancing students' ability to cope with English texts (understanding, summarizing, reacting to the content).
Allowing students to speak about various topics related to educational sciences through oral presentations and discussions based on the texts of the coursebook.

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

The level of this course corresponds to the European levels B1-B2. Students will thus need to have a good basic knowledge of English and a thorough knowledge of the vocabulary and grammar studied in the first-year course.
 

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Mode of delivery (face to face, distance learning, hybrid learning)

Weekly 3-hour class (every other week) in a group of 40 students from September to May. (A combination of face-to-face and online teaching depending on the evolution of the health crisis).
Thorough preparation is required so as to enable students to progress throughout the year.

Additional information:

Written exam in January (30% of the final mark): vocabulary and reading comprehension exercises based on extracts from the texts studied in class.
Written exam in May/June (40% of the final mark): vocabulary and reading comprehension exercises based on an unseen text.
Oral exam in June (30% of the final mark): discussion based on two oral presentations.

Organisational remarks and main changes to the course

Students will have to make an oral presentation about academic papers related to an educational issue of their choice.
