Learning unit contents
The course focusses on teaching students the finer points of academic writing. Students will study theory, analyse authentic academic materials and apply this knowledge to produce written academic texts.
Learning outcomes of the learning unit
At the end of this course, students will be able to:
- analyse English scientific literature,
- produce an abstract for a scientific article,
- critically analyse a scientific paper,
- write a structured article.
Prerequisite knowledge and skills
Advanced English for Biomedical Science (taught in the second year of the Bachelor's Degree in Biomedical Science) i.e. LANG5001-1 and LANG5002-1, or equivalent.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods
Each class requires preparation which is essential and mandatory.
There are no ex-cathedra lectures but rather language seminars in which students will be asked to take part regularly and actively.
There will be several written assignments to complete over the semester. Most of these writing exercises will be written in class, and then finished at home.

The course features 2-hour in-class sessions. These sessions will be completed by writing assignments available on eCampus and designed to help the students to prepare for the exam.

Advanced English for Biomedical Research: Writing (2023-2024) course notes are compulsory, as is Internet access to eCampus.

Additional information:
The student will be assessed through a written exam in January (produce a written abstract of a scientific article and produce a critical review of that article) and continuous evaluation of progress through preparation and individual assignments.
The student's overall grade (/20) will be calculated as follows:
- Continuous assessment (general participation in class activities: writing homework, research workshops, in-class writing practice sessions, etc.) - 4/20
- Written exam - 16/20 (Scientific abstract - 8/20 & Critical review - 8/20)
