Learning unit contents

From Indo-European to Greek and Latin. Study of the historical phonology and morphology of Greek and Latin languages, with particular attention to Indo-European roots. The only course which gives to the students in Classical Languages and Literatures a systematical account of the main features of literary Greek dialects and of the story of Latin language. This knowledge is essential to read Greek literature from the origins to the Vth or IVth century, in fact the richest contribution of ancient Greek literature, and to have access to the oldest Latin texts.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

To help the students to explain the origin of the different forms of the Greek and Latin morphology and to read Greek texts in dialects and texts in archaic Latin.

Knowledge of Greek and Latin.
