Learning unit contents
The commentary concerns a work or a part of a work selected for its linguistic and literary interest. The linguistic features are studied as closely as possible without neglecting the contents and the literary tradition. Examples of texts studied: Petronius, Cena Trimalchionis, with particular attention to language levels (literary Latin vs. vulgar Latin), vulgar language and Hellenisms, Cicero's Dream of Scipio. the epigrams of Martial, Apulée, the tale of Amor and Psyche, Apulée, book XI of Metamorphoses (the Isis-book), Juvénal.
Learning outcomes of the learning unit
The aim of the learning is to understand deeply the problems connected with the commentary of a Latin text of high degree of difficulty. The emphasis is on the problems of translating a Latin text into French.
Prerequisite knowledge and skills
Good knwoledge of Latin language and literature.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods
The students have to prepare a personal work (a comparison of translations) and to propose a translation of a passage studied during the lessons. (summary of a work of Latin literature). The modalities of this work are specified orally during the course.
