Learning unit contents

The course aims to prepare students for scientific reading and writing in the disciplines involved in Romance Studies. It is divided into two main sections.

The first one involves mastering bibliographic research tools (online) and the formal techniques of ars citandi. After an ex cathedra lecture session, students will carry out exercises in class, under the supervision of the teaching staff.


The second part involves reading and understanding a scientific text, in literary studies and linguistics. The class teachers will suggest a text to be read together and will help the students to understand it. Students then work at home to write a summary and a possible extension based on the proposed texts. These written works, corrected by the class teachers, will be the subject of a group correction session.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

By the end of the course, students will have mastered the prerequisites for developing a dissertation project in Romance studies.

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

To have acquired the necessary credits in Romance Languages and Literatures to access this Bac3 course.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

The course is given face-to-face. It alternates between ex-cathedra lectures, exercises and seminars.

Additional information:

The course is assessed on the basis of an individual written assignment, identical to the one completed during the year. This work consists of :

- choosing a scientific article in literary studies, and a scientific article in linguistics ;


- providing a correct and complete reference


- writing a summary of the article, leading to a possible extension.


The paper will be handed in at the beginning of the examination session. It should be between 3000 and 6000 characters long.

Technically, this work requires an Internet connection and word processing software (such as Word, odt or pdf). If you have any problems meeting these requirements, please let us know. And if you know that one of your fellow students is experiencing difficulties of this type, please contact us too: the university has solutions to resolve these situations.

The course takes place on 2nd Term only, on Mondays, from 11AM to 1PM, classroom "Petit Physique".
