Learning unit contents
In the first part of the course, normal renal glomerular and tubular functions are reminded with the symptoms of renal disease when present. An overview of glomerular, tubular, vascular and interstitial kidney diseases is made. A short description of the different methods available for kidney functions (glomerular and tubular) estimation is given with examples of their importance in the medication prescription. Acute and chronic kidney diseases are eventually discussed.
In the second part of the course, the principles of artificial treatments of acute or chronic renal insufficiency are rbriefly presented, with short description of particular options such as hemoperfusion. Plasmapheresis is also presented..
Sterile and biocompatible material must be used. Blood from the patient is put in contact with an artificial synthetic membrane which could induce some side-effects. During the session, febrile reaction, itching, acute symptoms could be developed linked to some bad use of the artificial material. Moreover, medications given (such as antibiotics) could be removed during such treatment and the best time for their administration is presented.
The best procedure with methodology for evaluating its application is reminded during the course (especially the quality of the dialysis fluid) with the important role played by the pharmacists in this procedure application.
Peritoneal dialysis is also detailed with its advantages and potential side-effects.
Learning outcomes of the learning unit
To learn why and how such treatments for the failing kidneys are initiated, what are the modifications of the internal body composition induced by renal insufficiency, and how to manage the adaptations of drug dosage prescription in such situations.
To understand how potential febrile, chemical, physical, immunological and inflammatory reactions can develop when such treatments for supplying renal failure.
