The objective of this course is to contribute to the development of nursing science through knowledge, critical reading, and implementation of mixed methods research. The following plan is proposed:
A) Quantitative and qualitative approaches
Reminders Paradigm conflicts Advantages and limitations of the methods Exercises
B) Mixed methods: theoretical notions
Definition and history The 5 main functions (triangulation, complementarity, development, initiation and expansion) The notation Estimates (simultaneous, sequential and mono-method with conversion) Analysis exercise
C) Mixed approaches: analysis and integration of results
Mixed data integration approaches (complementary, dialectical tension and transformation/assimilation approaches) Data validation Quality criteria Analysis exercise

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

The purpose of this course is to contribute to the development of nursing science through knowledge, critical reading, and implementation of mixed research methods.

  • To identify a research question requiring a mixed method
  • To master the various mixed-methods research designs
  • To integrate quantitative and qualitative data
  • To properly use mixed-method research results
  • To critically read a mixed-methods research report
