Learning unit contents

-Definition and characterization of scientific frauds (or misconducts) on the basis of the classifications published by national (FNRS) and international agencies funding scientific research and of other sources. -Methods for studying scientific fraud. -Relationships between scientific fraud and low-quality experimental, methodological and social practices identified in many scientific fields ("bad science"). -Relationships between scientific fraud and the international system of funding and evaluating scientific production and scientists. -Suggested or adopted strategies aiming at reducing the growth of scientific misconduct.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

-Critical thinking. -More realistic knowledge of the real fonctionning of some aspects of contemporary science. -Reminding that the social responsability of scientists requires that they maintain high standards of ethical principles and methodolical quality in their eveyday work.

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

Basic knowledge in applied statistics and panoramic vision of the contemporary scientific disciplines.
