Learning unit contents

Evidence-Based Education (EBE) is a process of change that is based on rigorous scientific research to guide educational policies and practices. The evidence-based paradigm was first established in the medical field and in Anglo-Saxon countries. At the end of the 1990s, the evidence-based movement gained momentum in the field of education. According to its supporters, the reforms or programs proposed in education are too often based on proposals that have not been scientifically demonstrated, leaving the spotlight to the effects of fashion. In addition, researchers do not care enough to offer effective and replicable practices in a real context. Recently, the EBE got involved in the Pact of Excellence, where we find the will to provide teachers and schools with proven tools.
 
After a contextualization, the course will alternate theoretical and practical moments. In the end, it will be a question of selecting a well-established program/ tool (such as Octofun or MindMapping for example) or which seems relevant for our education system (method to improve reading or mathematics skills, such as the Singapore method for example ) in order to analyze the scientific evidence of its effectiveness.
 
The course will introduce you to each of the stages of a synthesis of the best evidence, through the establishment of selection criteria, the search for scientific articles using ad hoc tool, the selection of relevant information in papers, the computations of effect sizes and the analysis of results leading to conclusions.


 

 

 

 

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

At the end of the course, the student will have learned to
- Use databases to select relevant articles in educational sciences.
- Establish selection criteria for articles related to a specific project.
- Evaluate the scientific relevance of available articles.
- Evaluate the level of proof of the effectiveness of a method / tool / program according to the current state of knowledge in educational sciences.
- Draw conclusions that take into account the quality and quantity of the available evidence, as well as the magnitude of the effects obtained.
 
 

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

To be able to understand at least the abstract of a scientific paper in English.

 

 

 

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Alternating presentations and practical exercises leading the student to carry out him/herself, under the supervision of supervisors, the different stages of a synthesis of the best evidence.
 
 

Mode of delivery (face to face, distance learning, hybrid learning)

The face-to-face mode will be preferred, as the students will be guided by the supervisors to carry out the practical parts of the course.
 
 

Recommended or required readings

Course materials will be available on eCampus. There is no specific syllabus or book to purchase.
 
 

Written work / report


Additional information:

The best evidence synthesis produced step by step during/between the course sessions will be the subject of a report which will be evaluated. The outline of the report and the evaluation criteria will be presented during the course.
