PHY0048 A and C

Coherent optics and lasers applications

Theory (lectures) : 10h
Laboratory : 15h
The lectures are preferentially given in English.
This optics course is matching the needs of Engineers ad Physicists. Physical optics isrefreshed. Then, deeper matters are taught.
The aim of the course is to bring an overall view of the application domains and technologies relating to modern optics. In the program, physical optics with coherence aspects including interferences and diffraction are explained.
Concepts are presented in a phenomenological approach with an intuitive physical understanding.

Laser physics

Theory (lectures): 5h
Laboratory: 5h
The lectures are preferentially given in English.
This course is intended for the Physicists who desire to enhance their knowledge in laser optics. Physice principles and technologies are detailed.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

Coherent optics and lasers applications

Bring an overview focused on polarization and coherence of light with a highlight on modern applications

Laser physics

Students will learn how a laser is made and how it is working.
The physical parameters and orders of magnitude and the applications are reviewed as well.

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

Coherent optics and lasers applications

Knowledge of basics in geometric and physical optics (specific courses that are supposed to be given during 1st and 2nd Bachelor)

Laser physics

Knowledge of basics in physical optics and quantum mechanics (Bachelor degree)

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

The personal project that is required can cover any sub section of the course (A and C). One a single project is requested.

Coherent optics and lasers applications
