Learning outcomes of the learning unit

The lecture will aim to give the student the physical and mathematical basis for understanding phenomena dealing with fluids. Physical concepts providing a macroscopic description of the fluid will be presented. The classical laws for the fluid motion will then be derived. A special attention will be paid on a physical and intuitive description of the different phenomena. Within this context, dimensional analysis will be introduced and used, among others, in the case of fluid instabilities.

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

Good methematical and physical basis of one year in physical sciences is recommanded  i.e. MATH0009-4, MATH0009-5 and PHYS0188-1.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

There is no clear distinction between the theoretical lecture and the practical sessions. There will be times theoretical developments invite to solve practical cases while other times, practical problems require new mathematical tools.
The learning is done through lectures, reversed classeroom and often the students are divided into groups of 4-5 to try to solve practical situations from the current and past scientific literature, with the help of professor. Each group presents its results to the audiance and the confrontation with the experiences allows to discuss the progress.
