Learning unit contents

Present course topic includes an overview of methods and techniques applied for encoding and processing of medical images. The image formats as well as techniques used for data handling, sharing, archiving and exchange will be presented. The course will address three imaging modalities. Namely, positron emission tomography (PET), computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Technical aspects concerning acquiring modalities will be discussed, along with advantages and limitations for each distinct modality. Image processing, specifically image co-registration (realignment, co-registration, normalization, fusion) will be addressed. Image processing oriented statistical analysis will be discussed as well.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

The aim of our course is to introduce students to basic image processing principles such as encoding, handling, sharing, archiving of medical images. Data processing skills development including image co-registration will be facilitated as well.

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

General physics, concepts of image and signal processing are desirable.

The students have to fulfill the following:

  • Perform limited literature search and select two articles;
  • Prepare a critical review of both selected articles;
  • Prepare an oral presentation of one of the selected articles and answer questions;
  • Actively participate and ask quetions during classmates presentations;
 
The assessment will rely on :
  • The quality of the review (/5)
  • The quality of the oral presentation (/5)
  • The answers to the questions (/5)
  • Active participation during courses and questions asked during classmates presentations (/5)
