Learning unit contents

This course offers different theoretical approaches relevant to psychopathology. Each approach is particularly interested in psychological processes which can be dysfunctional and involved in the emergence and/or maintenance of psychopathology.

The theoretical approaches proposed are as follows:

- relational psychopathology

- integrative psychopathology

- psychodynamic psychopathology

- psychotrauma

- psychopathology of aging.



On the one hand, the theoretical material is viewed separatly by different lecturers.

On the other hand, clinical cases will be used to illustrate specific points of the subject, but also to gain a multiple and transversal understanding of complex clinical cases.
 

Introduction to psychopathology

The course aims to introduce and integrate the different parts of the teaching unit. 

The psychopathology of ageing

The course adresses the question of the specificity of psychotherapeutic support for elderly people.

Psychological traumas

This course will present the psychological caractheristics of psychotraumatism: history, diagnosis, traumatical events, traumatism in childhood, secondary psychotraumatism, factors of protection and risk, assessment and intervention methods

Relational psychopathology

Description

This course aims to introduce students to the fundamental principles of the complex hypothesis in psychopathology, according to the systemic psychology approach. The course consists of 20 hours of theoretical teaching that will cover the main concepts of relational psychopathology, accompanied by the presentation of clinical cases.


Contents

  • Psychopathology from the perspective of the systemic approach
  • Analysis of interactions, relationship types, and pathological communication in human systems
  • The representational and historical-temporal axis in understanding psychopathology
  • Systemic theoretical models of pathological functioning
  • Resource analysis of human systems
 

Psychodynamic psychopathology

The structural approach of psychopathology is developed in this course, based on classical psychiatric semiology and inspired by the main concepts of contemporary French and Anglo-Saxon psychoanalysis including Melanie Klein, Donald Winnicott, Wilfred Bion, Margaret Mahler, André Green, René Roussillon, etc.

These constitute the fundamental tools and concepts resulting from theorizing work based on clinical practice.

We will address the following nosological entities: neuroses, borderline states, psychoses.

The theoretical and clinical developments will be illustrated by several clinical situations.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

The student should be able to master the theoretical concepts of the different approaches offered within the course:

- relational psychopathology

- integrative psychopathology

- psychodynamic psychopathology

- psychotrauma

- psychopathology of aging.

Students should be able, based on clinical signs from a case, to identify the relevant theoretical conceptsto the understanding of the clinical case and resulting from different theoretical approaches.

Psychological traumas

The purpose of this course is that at the end, students have a clinical knowledge about psychotraumatisms and can assess and give a diagnosis as well as apply appropriate psychological intervention

Relational psychopathology

At the end of this course the student will be able to consider and analyze psychological suffering within its relational context. The acquired knowledge will help guide the student in formulating hypotheses about the role of relational factors in the prevention, development and maintenance of psychopathology.

Integrative psychopathology

Basic concepts will be taught, illustraed via specific examples of psychopathological states.

 

Psychodynamic psychopathology

At the end of this course, students will be able to :

- describe and recognize the major poles of psychological organization ;

- identify the specific characteristics of the poles of organization ;

- manipulate the main basic concepts of the psychodynamic approach to psychopathologies.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Theoretical contents will be taught in ex-cathedra classes or via podcasts. At the end of the semester, an exercise session is proposed, focusing on the understanding of a clinical case.

Additional information:

The written exam is divided into two main parts:

  • A theoretical section
  • A transversal clinical case
The first part will assess theoretical knowledge of the subject and MCQs, while the second part will assess the mobilization of this knowledge via a clinical case.

The final mark will be weighted as follows: 60% of the mark for the theoretical part and 40% for the transversal clinical case. Students must succeed each part.

In case of failure of the first part, the second part will not be corrected and a mark of 0 will be awarded to this second part. The overall mark awarded will then be the weighted average of the mark for the first part (60%) and the mark of 0 for the second part (40%). 

If a student passes the first part and fails the second, only the mark for the second part is awarded. The mark for the first part is therefore not taken into account in calculating the overall mark.

If both parts are passed, the overall mark is established by the weighted average of the two marks (60% for the first part and 40% for the second part).
