Learning unit contents

Part of the course provides basic knowledge about coastal environment and its development, in order ti be able to have a constructive study during the 3 field days.


The course is divided in 4 parts covered by podcast:

-Generality on coastal system;

-Specific processes 

- Eastuary and Cliff

- Human planning and impact

The course is based on personal work integrating: bibliographic, online and cartographic resources with the field trip to produce a final report.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

- Knowledge on the coastal system 

-Theoretical and pratical Knowledge about coastal development and associated risks

- The case study developed in the course uses filed work, bibliographic, cartographic and other ressources to build a comprehensive report on coastal development, risk and prevention around the Sommes Bay. The approach is general and can be applied to other cases.

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Spiral approach with different steps:

(1) Acquisition of basic knowledge on the coastal environment

(2) Selection of a given study area and problematic

(3) Drafting of a first summary note by explaining the resources found on the issue;

(4) Field visit and work;

(5) Report on the study area highlighting:

  • Geomorphology and processes involved;
  • Current development at the sites and the impact of its development on the coastal environment;
  • Hazard and risk involved;
  • Development policy for these sites in relation to the risk issue.
