Learning unit contents

The course offers a theoretical and practical introduction to the translation of different types of texts (informative, persuasive, expressive texts) from French into Dutch. The topics covered will mainly be of a general nature (e.g. society, tourism, education, environment, health), although some more specific topics (e.g. literature, economics, law) may also be introduced. We will use mostly (semi-)authentic texts. In addition, the course aims to deepen the students' lexical and grammatical knowledge as well as their translation skills into the target language.

knowledge of the effect of text type on translation strategies; leverage parallel corpora as an additional tool for translation.

Translation exercises (as a group and individual exercises); Oral presentation of a translation exercise and a theoretical text.

Additional information:

During the first term:

  • Present a translation exercise, cannot be rescheduled (10% of the final grade)
 

At the end of the first term:

  • A written translation test (2 hours, translation of an unknown text; 40% of the final grade).
 

During the second term:

  • Oral presentation of a theoretical text about corpus-based translation studies, cannot be rescheduled (10% of the final grade)
  • Questions about theoretical texts (5% of the final grade)
 

At the end of the second term:

  • A written translation test (2 hours, translation of an unknown text; 35% of the final grade).
