Learning unit contents
This course summarizes basic notions in statistics (random variables, distributions, hypotheses testing, descriptive statistics), with an emphasis on the techniques to be used for courses to be taught during the year (risk analysis, for example). Theoretical aspects are illustrated using a spreadsheet.
Learning outcomes of the learning unit
A goal is to help the student to become familiar with the various descriptive measures used in statistics to summarize a data collection, and, more importantly, to demonstrate how field problems can be addressed through statistical hypotheses testing.

8 hours lectures, with numerous illustrating examples to be discussed interactively with the students.
Recommended or required readings
An electronic copy of the slides and of the numerous examples illustrating the course are provided to the students at the first course.
A series of exercises, similar to those worked during the course, is used as a written exam to obtain the student's score.
Work placement(s)
Organisational remarks and main changes to the course
2 sessions of 4 hours are given. The schedule is fixed to allow master and certificate students to attend.
