Scientific English II

This English course continues the language training of Veterinary students by focussing on the oral understanding of veterinary information.
 

Critical appraisal of scientific literature

The objective of this theoretical and practical training is to help students read scientific information in a critical way and be prepared for the Evidence-based Medicine approach, which will be developed in master.
Acquired knowledge and skills will prove useful during university education and professional career.

Introduction to occupational and interpersonal skills

This activity is a sensitization to the importance of developing an adequate professional relationship with clients and other healthcare professionals.

Scientific English II

The objectives of the English course are twofold:

• develop the understanding of scientific information presented orally, and
• reinforce the students' knowledge of the vocabulary of veterinary English through various listening comprehension and note-taking exercises.

Critical appraisal of scientific literature

This training will enable students to carry out literacy information research.
It involves a two-pronged approach:

• a theoretical part, in amphitheater, which will enable students (i) to identify the different types of scientific papers, (ii) understand the notion of biased rendering of information, and (iii) skim resources to select the most appropriate data,
• a practical part, given in small groups, which will enable students (i) to acquire the necessary independence to select relevant resources in order to solve a given problem, (ii) to read a scientific paper and assess its quality (method, bias, etc.) using an checklist.

Students will be sensitized to the importance of communication in healthcare, in a veterinary and sometimes also in an interdisciplinary context

Thorough knowledge of the veterinary vocabulary and scientific English features seen in the first two veterinary English courses.

A good knowledge of the document literacy information search processes and tools (VETE2104 course) are necessary.

Listening comprehension exercises to be done individually following a course schedule given in the presentation session of the course.
There is no automatic entitlement to exemption.

Four theoretical hours followed by four hours of practical exercises.  The course starts in the second quarter (February). It is organized so as to encourage students' active participation.

The English Listening Practice module of the course consists of graded listening comprehension exercises on eCampus and an exam that will verify the students' ability to take notes during a short lecture and answer precise questions on the topic of the lecture.

In the course of the year there will be six compulsory listening comprehension tests on eCampus and several in-person or online LC exercises. All those tests aim at helping the the students test and improve their ability to understand specialised information given orally. The latter are scheduled on CELCAT.

The students' ability to accurately understand veterinary information given orally will be assessed through a compulsory listening comprehension and note-taking test. The students will be asked to listen to a 15-minute veterinary talk and answer MCT questions and a few short-answer open questions based on the notes they have taken.

The English module is assessed twice in January (50% of the module grade) and in June (50% of the module grade). There's only one listening comprehension in the resit exam. 

The English grade accounts for 60% of the global grade of VETE2109. However, if the grade for English is less than or equal to 8.00/20, this failed grade will be used as global grade for VETE2109.
 
In September, the students have to resit only the module(s) for which they did not obtain marks equal to or greater than 10.00/20.

Partial exemptions (based on pass grades of 10.00 or more in one or more modules) will be carried over from one academic year to the next.
