Learning unit contents

Physiology of Nervous System - partim 2 details the aspects of nervous and endocrine integrations. The cardio-vascular, respiratory, digestive, and immune systems are also studied, with a particular focus on the influence of the autonomous nervous system on these systems. More specifically, the Chapters of this Partim II cover:

- Chapter VII - nerve integration:
basic organization of groups of neurons; nervous reflexes (spinal and somatic); sensory reception and perception; initiation and integration of motor activities; higher mental functions (brain waves; sleep-wake cycle; consciousness; learning; memory; sex and brain)
- Chapter VIII - endocrine system:
general characteristics; structure and general actions of hormones; general control of hormonal secretions; main endocrine glands (pituitary gland; thyroid; parathyroid; adrenal; gonads; pancreas); nervous and endocrine integration
- Chapter IX - cardiovascular system:
cardiac anatomy; electrical properties of the heart muscle; electrocardiogram; cycle of heart contraction; heart sounds; cardiac flow; regulation of cardiac output; blood circulation; blood pressure and resistance; bllod pressure regulation; distribution of blood to tissues; capillary exchanges; blood and its compounds; blood groups
- Chapter X - respiratory system:
general considerations; anatomy of the respiratory system; ventilatory mechanics; respiratory volumes and capacities; alveolar ventilation; gas exchanges; transport of respiratory gases in the blood; breathing regulation

Chapter XIII - digestive system:
digestive processes; functional concepts; structural organization; gastric secretion; pancreatic secretion; absorption phenomena; hunger and satiety
  Chapter XIV - immune system:
terminology; antibody structure; cellular and humoral immunity; lymphoid tissue; formation of T cells and B cells; T cells and cellular immunity; B cells and humoral immunity; autoimmunity
Note that Chapters XI (renal system) and XII (thermoregulation) are deleted from the subject of this academic year.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

The objective of the course (part 2) is to understand the principles of the integration of nervous functions as well as the functioning of the endocrine, cardiovascular, respiratory, digestive and immune systems. The influence of the autonomic nervous system (orthosympathetic and parasympathetic) on these physiological systems is highlighted.
As for part 1, the important elements for students of physiological sciences and speech therapy are underlined, in the perspective of their future professional practice.
More specifically, the learning objectives correspond to the table of contents of the course, described in detail in the "contents of the teaching unit" section.

Additional information:

The evaluation will be done by written exam in the form of multiple response questions (QRM),
with several proposals (items) for each question.

For EVERY question, any combination will be possible: either no proposition will be correct,
or one proposition will be correct, or two propositions will be correct, or three propositions
will be correct, ... or all the propositions will be correct. Abstentions will be possible.


This corresponds to a generalized "true-false" type examination (SMART terminology)
